You need a mood board. No exceptions.
You could say that mood boards, and how I use them, are the “secret” to my process.
They sound really abstract and fluffy out of context… so what’s the big deal?
A mood board is the visual expression of the essence of your business condensed into a single canvas.
How is that not powerful?
Maybe it begins as playful exploration… but its final form is actionable direction.
It becomes the north star of your visual identity.
I always begin my creative process with a mood board. I refuse to skip this step, even in the most expedited projects. It is THAT important.
Because If I don’t get on the same page with my client about the world we’re creating… we’re both flying blind!
It’s IMPOSSIBLE to precisely convey a visual experience with words. “Red” is a slightly different color to all of us.
We solve that by putting a single shade of “red” on the mood board — so we are in visual, not just verbal, agreement.
As a designer, a good mood board takes my client relationships out of “mind reading” and “hoping they get it” and into a visual, tangible plan to which we can both fully consent.
With an approved mood board, there are NO surprises for either of us.
You know exactly what you’ll get, because I’ve already shown it to you.
In my Brand Actualization process, the mood board I create becomes your Brand Vision.
I gather all of the information I’ve collected from our initial consultation and intake — everything you’ve shared about the values and vision of your business, what it offers, who it serves, how, and what makes your work unique from anyone else’s — and reflect back what you’ve shown me, visually.
It's a translation from the verbal and energetic into the visual. It’s a mood. It’s a strategic direction. It's a peek into what is possible. It’s divination.
After I show you what I see, it’s up to YOU to tell me if I got it right, and consent to my vision for your brand.
In my experience, I can confidently promise that it will be more beautiful, expansive, and true than you ever imagined you could ask for.
And this is how, at the end of the day, you get a visual identity that you never could have dreamed up or executed on your own.
This is the difference between investing in a done-for-you service, and DIYing it alone.
If this piques your interest, stimulates your curiosity, and some part of you KNOWS you are ready for this… now is the time to reach out.
Or, if you know someone who is looking for this clarity in the visual expression of their business... don't hesitate to send this post. I can't wait to meet them!
