6 ways that branding = magical practice
This one is for the witches and occult practitioners out there! Have you ever wondered if your brand and “aesthetic” is important or worth investing in? Well, it’s kind of like explaining to someone why they should give a fuck about MAGIC. Here’s why:
1. They both focus your intention and will.
Branding clarifies your message to your audience. Magic clarifies your message to spirit. Visual cues help people get to know you and your vibe immediately and easily, which makes them that much more excited to work with you. Just like the more you clarify the intention for a spell - perhaps also adding relevant visual cues like colors, symbols, sigils, etc - the more easily your allies and the universe can fulfill that intention.
2. They don’t replace hard work, but they DO enhance it.
Like magic, branding cannot “fix” your entire business or make it successful in one fell swoop. If you do a spell to find a job, you still have to apply for jobs. If you create a brand to attract your ideal client, you still have to offer something your ideal client actually needs. Both the spell and the brand will “grease the wheels” in your favor… but they don’t replace the practical, mundane work required to build a viable business or “meet the universe halfway.”
3. If you don’t fully think things through, there can be unintended consequences.
In the same way that any spell or ritual needs to be intentionally constructed to get a result, your branding has to be intentional to get a result, too. If you’re not fully conscious of your choices - you might not get the result you desire or expect! When you choose not to address how your business presents visually, it’s akin to not doing the inner work to address unconscious beliefs or aspects of your life that could block your spell.
You can accidentally make things a LOT harder for yourself, blocking your ideal customers from finding you, or even communicating something that contradicts your values entirely. If you often get clients who aren’t a good fit, don’t get good results, or are very surprised by your approach/personality when they start working with you, this is a sure sign you have some branding work to do!
4. The only way to mastery is fucking around and finding out.
Both branding and magic are complex skills that take consistent practice to learn and master. Asking “how to pick a font” is equivalent to asking “how to read tarot.” Sure, I can give you a 101 version (and you can easily find it for free on the internet) but there’s no quick elevator pitch! To REALLY learn, it’s a major time commitment, both in training and self-guided practice.
5. Anyone can teach themselves, but sometimes it’s best to ask/hire a pro to get something done right.
Like professional magicians, professional designers exist to consult you on the best course of action, introduce you to new methods and techniques, guide you through troubleshooting. We can also do FOR you what you are not able to do - or do not want to do - yourself. If you don’t have the desire or time to commit to becoming an expert, hire one.
6. The proof is in the pudding.
It can be difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t tried it themselves why or how magic “works.” It’s just too complex, contextual, and personal. You just have try it and see - what’s it worth to change your life, just a little bit? To prove that you are part of something much more vast and mysterious than you ever imagined?
Likewise, I can’t promise a specific ROI or statistical outcome from a rebrand - there are too many moving pieces in a business that factor into views, sales, profit. But, what’s it worth to connect with people who really “get” you? To have clients KNOW they have to work with you as soon as they land on your page? To know exactly what sets you apart from your competitors and peers, to show up and sell confidently and consistently because you know who you are, and no one can take that from you?
You tell me.
